Gomphotherium means "nail beast," so named because of its straight, doubled tusks, lived all over the world, from the early Miocene (~23 mya) to the early Pliocene (around ~4 mya). They are distant cousins of the elephant and belong to a group known as elphantimorphs.

The largest gomphotheres exceeded today's largest African elephants in size and height. This specimen heralds from South Dakota and stood 13' tall at the shoulder and was 9' long.

This scientifically accurate scale model was created by scanning the skull of a probable new species of Gomphotherium (under study!) and then 3D printing it to 1:8 scale.

This replica is hand-painted by paleo artisans in the USA, therefore they are subject to variation in color making each specimen unique.
