Aenocyon dirus Leidy, 1858
Pronounced “Uh- no- sigh- on Die -russ”
Means “Terrible wolf”
Named for its size
Lived in North America, China, Pleistocene - Holocene (120,000 - 9,000 years ago)
Armed with the most powerful mammalian bite, pound-for-pound, the Dire Wolf lived in packs up to 9,000 years ago in North America. Recently its name was changed from Canis dirus to Aenocyon thanks to research on genetic components that indicated it actually split from the canid line roughly 5 million years ago.
Our skull is 10.5" x 7" x 7.5" and comes on a metal stand worthy of the ultimate wolf!
