Canis diris

Every bit as large as the wolves in a recent popular TV and book series, Canis diris, aka the Dire Wolf, averaged 150 lbs in weight!  Canis diris has the strongest bite of any dog ever discovered, eating horses, camels, bison, and even mammoths and mastodons at times.  It hunted in packs and lived until modern times.  The La Brea tarpits have produced hundreds of skeletons.
